The European Commission established the initiative "Coal Regions in Transition" in 2017, with its primary goal being the gradual transition from fossil fuels to a carbon-neutral economy. To fulfill the commitments of the Paris Agreement and implement the Energy Union strategy, the European Commission also introduced a new set of energy rules in November 2016, known as "Clean Energy for All Europeans" or the "Winter Energy Package." Funding is allocated in the multiannual financial framework of the EU for the period 2021-2027. The Commission focuses on regions facing economic and societal challenges related to the decline of coal mining. These regions include the Moravian-Silesian Region, along with the Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem Regions.
The aim is to assist member states and regions in the transition to clean energy by focusing on the social impacts and structural transformation in the economies of these regions.
The Coal Platform department is responsible for coordinating and methodically running the transformation process in the industrial and energy sectors in order to move towards achieving the commitment to climate neutrality in the Czech Republic, particularly in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Key topics include issues related to central heating for residents, the non-production and industrial sectors, the promotion of low-emission energy sources, the development of clean mobility, and, last but not least, support for the hydrogen economy.
